On the occasion of Bread Day, we talked to Delfi TV about the meaning of bread today
On the occasion of the upcoming Bread Day, Delfi TV presenter Julija Leimonė interviewed our bread sommelier, product development manager Snieguole Šoblinskienė and ethnologist of the Vilnius Ethnic Culture Centre Gailė Vanagienė about the place of bread in the life of Lithuanians.
As Snow White said, bread is an integral part of our Lithuanian roots and an irreplaceable everyday food.
"Nowhere else in the world will you find such bread as ours. This is both our heritage and local food adapted to our body. Two slices of rye bread – and you get a daily intake of fiber needed by the body. Our unique bread is one of those values we can be proud of."
According to Gailė, bread teaches us fundamental values both before and now.
"It teaches patience, because the path of bread to the table is long, it teaches us to conserve and respect food, gratitude for having it on the table. Even the very word "bread" has become synonymous with food and life in our country, and bread in the Lithuanian tradition is sacred, it is part of all the most important occasions, holidays and rites."
On Wednesday, someone will consecrate a piece of bread in church, someone will kiss a slice, as taught by a grandmother, and someone will eat a sandwich with a slice of rye bread just while enjoying it. In any case, bread remains a part of our Lithuanian identity.
Watch the conversation. Happy Bread Day!
